Promotion and tenure of
faculty is determined by each executive committee of the
College/Schools making a recommendation to the Office of the
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs based on a
faculty member’s demonstration of teaching, research and
service. These recommendations are then sent to the
Chancellor for his approval and submitted to the Board of
Regents. While the ultimate decision for granting promotion
and/or tenure rests solely with the University of Michigan
Board of Regents, each college or school follows their own
criteria and procedures for tenure and/or promotion review
which has previously been adopted by the governing faculty
of each college/school. For this reason, in addition to the
links provided on this web site, the Office of the Provost
and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs would advise new
and current faculty to review their college/school’s
criteria and procedures for tenure and/or promotion review.
